Notes This poem describes a child-soldier who has become displaced as a result of war: his mother is dead and his sister is in the bed of the commander. The vicious cycle of violence is emphasized in this poem. The child-soldier has become hardened and hollowed out by the war, while his dreams are haunted by memories of his mother and sister, and of his own wiped-out village.
