Notes This poem describes a young Irishman, Paddy, who has fought in World War I and been traumatized by war and the bombings he experienced, one bomb of which exploded near him, leaving him injured. He wanders the Irish landscape, speaking the 'King's English' and recounting stories of his time in the British Army, and his service in France during the war. He served as he couldn't find work in Ireland, although after his invaliding out of the army, he received no pension and thus wanders the country. The speaker of the poem is a young boy, who listens to Paddy's tales with wonder, as he comes around every season to his area.
