Notes | Ceaucescu, mentioned in this poem, was the communist dictator of Romania who implemented the most totalitarian of all of the Eastern Bloc regimes. He was overthrown and executed in the Romanian Revolution of 1989. This poem describes his killing, with the speaker of the poem noting that the brutality of his death, which appeared on screens around the world, inspired sympathy for the dictator and his wife. |
