Notes This poem is most likely referring to World War I. The speaker of the poem describes a scene in which a young girl watches a soldier playing a tune on an instrument as he is shipped off to war. The images shifts in the second half of the poem: the music ceases, and in the girl appears alone in the room, looking out of a window. The speaker describes how she is alone, except for the 'Cafarr Dubh' - a black ceremonial military headpiece, which here is emblazoned with a skull. This could be read as implying that the young man has been killed in war.
