| Notes | The title of the poem is taken from the poem 'Luck', by African-American poet, Langston Hughes. The speaker of this poem reflects on Hughes' poem which is displayed over the door of the subway as an incident occurs on the train - a black man flees from the police, running through the train itself, while the police give chase, with guns out. The poet-speaker, unnerved by the scene and surprised by other passengers lack of interest, wonders what the point of a poem is in such a harsh and merciless place. This poem carries significant undertones of police brutality and racism. |
