Notes The title of this poem, '1992', gives hints as to its meaning. There are oblique references to the fall of the Berlin Wall in the poem, although the speaker also says that new walls are also being built. The Somali famine (1992) was also ongoing at this time and had been caused by sectarian violence and looting in the country. It is likely that this is what the speaker is referring to when he states that if 'lón cogaidh' could be eaten, there would be no hunger. This is a play on the word 'lón', meaning both 'lunch' and in this case, 'war munitions'.
