Notes This poem describes the Christian biblical tale of Jesus' birth, and appears to connect it with independence from the Soviet Union, which had recently been declared by the Ukraine and the three Baltic states (Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania). In 1991, the Ukranian Independence referendum was successful, and the independence of the Baltic States had been recognised by the Soviet Union. Perhaps the speaker of the poem, in her note that the manger contains only a 'statue' of Jesus, connects his birth in Christmas 1991 with the 'birth' of democracy. Interestingly, the poem ends on a negative note, as the speaker describes the quiet coming of death on Christmas Eve.
