Notes This poem was originally published under the title '8 Nollaig' in Déithe an tSolais, 1994. The original iteration had no human rights implications. However, in this second publication, the poet has altered the second verse to include a reference to soldiers on lorries. While the speaker of the poem describes Ethiopia favourably, at the time of his visit, 1984, a famine was raging, as well as substantial civil disorder. This second publication of the poem is more reflective on the actual state of the country at the time of his visit.
