Notes | This poem's title appears to refer to an incident in which Pope John Paul II, in a visit to Nicaragua, attempted to quell the left-leaning independent church in the country which closely adhered to Liberation Theology. The church in the country was divided between Liberation priests and more orthodox priests who did not support the left-wing Sandinistas. The speaker of the poem appears to be one of these Liberation supports, who bemoans the failure of peaceful solutions in Nicaragua, and the fact that heaven cannot be achieved in the country. |
