Notes This long narrative poem explores aspects of Jewish culture and rituals of life in America. Many different characters and immigrant communities are mentioned in this poem, with most of the poem focusing on Rachel, a lawyer who is also Jewish, and likely, a second-generation immigrant. Most significantly, there are references to Zionism and the tension caused by the Israel-Palestine conflict. Yasser Arafat is mentioned by name here, which indicates that the poem is set around the time of the Second Intifada, or possibly soon after the 1993 peace settlement. There are significant references as well as to the Holocaust and to the family members that Rachel has lost during the genocide of the Jewish people - seventeen 'empty places' in her life.
