| Notes | The speaker of the poem describes a relationship she had with a Jewish women, in which she recommended the woman to read Toni Morrison, an African-American writer of stature. The poem appears to be making a comment about the melding and relationships between different emigrant communities - the quotation from Morrison herself: 'the melting pot never worked' - appears to be significant. Morrison's quotation, detailing how she is a black writer, but not just a black writer, also seems to hint at her experiences of racism in America. |
