| Notes | The speaker of the poem describes planting two trees during his youth in World War II. Now, one of the trees has fallen and is only a stump, while the other is still standing, but has has its limbs removed. The poem ends with a striking metaphor, comparing these chopped-off branches to the the hewn-off limbs of a soldier. |
