Paratext Text Faitíos roimh an tríú cogadh domhanda a spreag an Filí an píosa fada filíochta seo a chur i ndiaidh a chéile. Tá sé freisin ag iarraidh orainn ár n-anam a réiteach roimh lá seo an uafáis.
Notes The paratext of this poem gives significant background information to us regarding the poet's motivation for writing the poem. The work was likely inspired by the Cold War: more specifically, the threat of nuclear armageddon which hung over the world in the wake of World War II, and especially after the USA and USSR both possessed nuclear weapons. This poem expresses the poet-speaker's deep fears at what may come should a Third World War break out. Various aspects of this imagined war are mentioned, including the inability to hide from radiation, the razing of countries, the deaths of millions, the pollution and death of nature, and new sicknesses that will challenge the finest of doctors. In response to this worry, the poet-speaker implores the readers, and the leaders of the world, to put their trust and faith in Christ, and to turn our faces away from war and nuclear apocalypse. It is only through God that we can be saved from this future war.
