Notes | This poem, written by a Guatemalan revolutionary questions the lack of efforts of the 'non-political' Guatemalan intellectual class to help the poor of the country. This speaker of the poem interrogates the actions (or inaction) of the richest in society, while the poor suffer and are 'burned alive'. This is a likely reference to the 'Mayan genocide', during the Guatemalan military government's counter-revolutionary actions. Many of the Mayan indigenous people were disappeared, killed, or burned alive. |
