Notes | The speaker of the poem describes a woman appearing on the news, who has been devastated by the 2008 earthquake in Haiti. She lives in poverty and deprivation now, repeatedly and obsessively washing cups again and again. The speaker of the poem watches all this on the 9 O'Clock news on television, but cannot intervene to help this woman. The repetition of her cup-washing on television may refer to consistent news reporting of the disaster, or possibly a recurring advertisement for charity for those affected by the earthquake. The repetitive actions may also signify some kind of mental break as a result of the disaster. |
