Notes | The speaker of the poem describes his cousin's asthma affliction. In Ireland, he struggles greatly with breathing, while in Kosovo, he can breathe freely. The reference to Kosovo is notable as it was the site of a war (1998-1999) during which Serbs committed ethnic cleansing and forced expulsion of almost one million Albanian Muslims. The Irish Defence Forces had a presence there as part of an international peacekeeping force, which is likely the reason for his cousin's being in Kosovo in this poem. |
