| Notes | This elegy commemorates writer Christopher Isherwood, who along with his partner, was forced to flee Germany in the 1930s. There are explicit references to the rise of fascism, state oppression, and anti-LBGT policies enacted by the Nazis, who ruthlessly oppressed the gay culture of Berlin. There is also reference in passing to the arrest of Isherwood's partner, Heinz Neddermeyer. (He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1937 and sentenced to three and a half years forced labour and military service). |
