Notes | This poem strongly refers to the mediation of war imagery. The speaker appears, in the poem, to discuss a war film, yet there are specific references, such as his friend's 'grey sunburn' and the serving boy 'in a hurry' which appear to be outside of the imagery of war of the poem. A screen is described, upon which a submarine is struggling to preserve its crew - the captain is trying to figure out a solution to the sinking submarine while everyone stares at him expectantly. Could this poem refer to a specific event during World War II, or to a specific film? It appears to have some similarities to the film 'Das Boot' (1981). |
