Notes | Childhood innocence and play of the speaker's youth in neutral Ireland, while Hiroshima is bombed. Recreation of childhood scenes of play and exploration in peaceful Irish setting while Japan is being bombed simultaneously - contrast drawn between the scenes. The speaker has to try and remember: 'I suppose' - there was nothing momentous about this day in his childhood, despite his later understanding of the import of the date. This excerpt is the fifth section from a lyric sequence entitled 'Seabhac ag Guairdeall'. In the original publication the sections were numbered but here the poem is entitled: 'As Seabhac ag Guairdeall (Gan Teideal)' |
