Notes The speaker of this rhyming poem mourns the destruction of a hedge by a farmer, causing the deaths of animals and plants. The burning of the hedge encapsulates much of human cruelty for the speaker. She is reminded of the Holocaust, Hiroshima, the sinking of boats, the destruction of forests and the seas, all by the hand of humankind. The poem ends with the end of stars and galaxies, with only 'post-atomic cinders' remaining in the universe - an indestructible remnant of humankind.
