Notes | 'The folk reference in the poem is 'Aimhirgin', the Milesian character who was supposed to have colonized Ireland as the first of the Gaels. Here, Aimhirgin is imagined as a bringer of malevolence and death: Thalidomide, nuclear mushroom clouds and incarceration are all connected with him. There is a telling reference to 400 people being killed in a jumbo jet explosion. This could refer to a bombing or terrorist attack, but the context is not clear. The 'other' category in the Irish Context refers to the Thalidomide scandal. Thalidomide was an anti-nausea drug widely prescribed to pregnant woman which caused severe physical deformities in the unborn child and led to a significant amount of disability and deformity in Irish children. Amnesty International is mentioned in the poem. Paratext in other publications is not present in this publication. |
