| Notes | The speaker of this poem considers how people would ignore the mother of God (a ragged, poor Palestinian woman) if they saw her as she really was - poor and destitute. In that vein, the poem also described how history has 'edited' the Virgin Mother to make her more understandable to the masses - dressing her up in a blue blouse, raising her above us in prestige, and making her a religious icon. Despite this though, the speaker claims that most people would ignore her if they met her coming from a well, in her true form. |
